» Deity: Ariadne
» Reference: http://www.theoi.com/Georgikos/Ariadne.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariadne
» Divine Family: {mother & father} King Minos and Queen Pasiphaë of Crete; {spouse} Dionysus, after being abandoned by Theseus; {siblings} Phaedra, Catreus, Deucalion, Glaucus and Androgeus, half-brother Minotaur; {children} sons Oenopion, Staphylus, Thoas, Peparethos, Phliasos, and Eurymedon
» Mythology: Ariadne was the elder daughter of King Minos and Queen Pasiphaë of Crete. After her mother bore her seventh child--Ariadne's monstrous half-brother, the Minotaur--Ariadne watched as her father imprisoned the inventor Daedalus and his son Icarus to build the great Labyrinth, and once complete, condemn fourteen Athenian youths each year to die lost in its tunnels or killed at the hands of the Minotaur.
One year, among the fourteen Athenians sent to Crete was the Athenian prince Theseus. Ariadne was smitten with him at first sight, and could not bear to see him suffer the same fate as so many others. The night before the Athenians would be sent into the Labyrinth, Ariadne stole away to Theseus's room. There she offered him both a sword and a ball of red yarn that she had spun in exchange for a promise: that if he survived the Labyrinth and slew the Minotaur, he would take her back to Athens as his bride.
With the help of her gifts, Theseus did manage to kill the beast and escape, taking Ariadne with him. On the way back to Athens, they paused at the island of Naxos. When Ariadne woke the next morning, she was alone--Theseus and the ship were gone. Confused and heartbroken, she wept and even considered suicide by hanging, until she was approached by the wine-god Dionysus, who comforted her and soon took her as his own wife, giving her a splendid bridal diadem of stars (immortalized as the constellation Corona).
Some time later, shortly after the birth of her twin sons, Oenopion and Staphylus, Ariadne revisited Naxos. There she was struck by one of Artemis's arrows and killed. Dionysus, however, ventured into the Underworld and brought back both Ariadne and his mortal mother Semele to Olympus, where they were granted immortality.

» Current Name: Denise Stephens
» Birthdate: 05/22/1984
» Height: 5'7"
» Distinguishing Marks: none, pierced earlobes
» Family: {mother & father} Elliot and Helen Stephens; {marital status/spouse} single/NA; {siblings} younger sister Tabitha; {children} none living; {pets} none
» Occupation: Video game designer
» Currently Residing In: Bellevue, Washington
» Ability: She has an uncanny knack for problem-solving and logic puzzles.
» History: Ariadne has had no other incarnations. However, all her life she has been fascinated by mazes, even having dreams about them, and the dreams have been becoming more vivid as she's gotten older.
As Denise, she was born in Connecticut and had a fairly average childhood, although she loved to seek out adventures as a little girl that more often than not tended to land her into trouble. Fortunately, aside from the usual childhood injuries and groundings, it wasn't usually too serious. She was a good student, frequently involved in math and science competitions, and earned a scholarship to attend MIT, where she studied computer science and game design.
Her headstrong ways continued to lead her into scrapes as she grew older, but among the worst of her troubles was shortly after she had earned her bachelor's degree. Only a few months after graduation, she discovered she was pregnant with the child of her boyfriend of two years. Denise decided to elope and raise a family with him, but her hasty plans were shattered when the baby's father bailed on her and she never saw him again. The stress and heartbreak led to a miscarriage at 11 weeks. As time has passed, she believes that she has come to terms with her ex's betrayal, but she has neither forgiven nor forgotten it. She does not like to discuss or even mention what happened, but she does experience depressive bouts from time to time if her memories of it are suddenly triggered.
She never told her parents about what happened, but came to Washington later that year in an attempt to learn from her youthful mistakes, rebuild and move on with her life. She managed to get by for the first few months with support from friends she had in the area, and after about six months was hired to do IT work at a local game-development company and was again able to stand on her own two feet. She has been with company for roughly 4 years now and has worked her way up to being on one of their design teams.
» Personality: Though a lovely young lady, the reborn Ariadne would still prefer to be recognized for her intelligence rather than her looks. Bright, confident and independent, she is an adept problem-solver and loves a challenge. She is especially good at logic-based problems and games, and has a particular fondness for mazes. She has excellent focus, which sometimes leading to the exclusion of all else (such as things like meals or sleep) until she solves whatever problem she's working on. She usually keeps a cool head on her shoulders, but she does have a strong impulsive streak and is something of an opportunist, so if she feels overwhelmed or sees a sudden opening for something she wants, she is prone to just throwing logic right out the window at times and "winging it." She usually takes a few minutes each day to do meditative exercises to destress and help curb her urges to rush headlong into things, her favorite being to trace a small pocket replica of the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth. She also enjoys knitting and crocheting, and spinning her own yarn for it, as she finds the rhythm soothing and likes having something useful at the end to show for her efforts. She tends to appear fairly stoic on the whole, and is usually carefully guarded when it comes to her emotions. She does have a romantic side as well, once she finally lets her guard down, but for the most part, she appreciates someone with whom she can match wits.
Although she tries not to let it happen very often, the times she does lose her cool, though, watch out! Denise's temper burns fast and hot when she's set off. When she's truly angry, her clever tongue can become extremely sharp and she does not think about the consequences of her actions.
Nonetheless, she is kindhearted, almost to a fault, and typically refuses to believe ill of anyone without evidence to back it up--though it does not mean that she automatically trusts other people. In fact, it can take a long time before she completely trusts another person. If she does discover she has been betrayed, she does not seek revenge, but tends to burn bridges for good and cut that person out of her life to the best of her ability. Otherwise, she hates to see innocent people or creatures suffering needlessly, so she does her best to be generous to the less-fortunate and those who are victims of circumstance. However, she also can be very forward and has a feminist side, thus she strongly believes that women should be willing to take their fates into their own hands. She especially hates to see women who allow themselves to be victimized by abusive partners and donates her time and even some of her crafts to women's crisis shelters whenever she can spare it.
She prefers to do things herself and is often reluctant to ask for help unless she really needs it--something she doesn't always realize until she's way in over her head. This is not to say that she can't be a team player, however. In fact, she is generally polite and can be quite diplomatic when she wants to be, preferring to use reason to persuade others rather than appealing to their emotional sides. She also does enjoy social outings, and is something of a wine connoisseur.
» Other Notes: Ariadne is straight, probably a 1 on the Kinsey Scale.
She is fluent in English, knows some basic Japanese and German, also knows some programming languages.
» Sample Journal: I cannot believe how many bugs are in the beta version of the game we're working on. I have no idea why they even went with this interface system when the one I came up with is so much more streamlined. I mean, isn't that part of what they pay me to do? Well, unfortunately, that's management for you. Can't do much about that unless you become management yourself. At this point, my job is just to make it work, but it seems like every time I make a patch, a new bug pops up! I've tried outlining it for the other programmers, but clearly something somewhere isn't right or the code would be working. It's so frustrating, sometimes I just want to kick the stupid thing and see if THAT helps. It won't, of course, but it'd make me feel better about it, at least.
Well, I'll get it figured out. Have a drink or two, clear my mind, sleep on it... Yeah. I'm sure I can come up with something better in the morning. I have to.
» Sample Log: "Could I get something in a chardonnay, please?"
The bartender nodded, and soon handed her a tall flute filled with sparkling pale gold wine.
"That's great, thank you," Denise said. She tipped the bartender and sipped thoughtfully at her drink. It was one she'd never tried before, and although she normally liked the crisper flavor of a chardonnay, she found this one just a little too dry for her tastes. Next time, she would have to go for a year that had a drier growing season. After all, less rain means more concentrated sugars, which make for a much sweeter vintage. With her other hand, she added a few scribbles with her pen to the napkin in front of her. She'd been writing on it since she sat down, and was still trying to figure out how she wanted to design the new inventory system for the newest RPG she was working on. After two days straight, she had a lot of ideas, but she didn't want to make it overly-complicated. In this case, she needed a "less is more" approach. Maybe... Maybe if she could just rework it this way... Yes, that seemed like it should do the trick. She'd give it a test run later on when she got the chance. In the meantime, she folded up the napkin and tucked it away in her purse pocket.
When she looked up, she noticed a knot of her friends at a table near the corner. Taking her glass with her, she walked over.
“Hi, everyone,” she said, smiling sheepishly as she pulled up a chair, “Sorry I’m a little late to join you. I’m afraid I’ve been taking my work home with me again. Another big project, so another big headache, of course. All the usual troubles. I’m sure you’re all used to hearing me complain about it by now. So, have I missed anything new with you?”
